1. The population of Bangladesh ranks seventh in the world, estimates ranging from 142 to 147 million.

2. Measuring at approximately 144,000 square kilometres, Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

3. Around 200 daily newspapers are published in Bangladesh, along with more than 1800 periodicals. However, regular readership is low, at about 15% of the population.

4. The national sport of Bangladesh is Kabadi: a 7-a-side team sport played without a ball or any other equipment. Taking turns, a player must try and tag a player from the opposing team, without taking a breath. This feat is proven by a contstant chant during the ‘raid ‘.

5. 60% of the population is 25 years old.

6. The literacy rate in Bangladesh is approximately 41%, with a rate of 50% among men and 31% among women.

7. Bangladesh remains among the poorest nations in the world with nearly half of the population living on less than 1 USD a day.

8. The Bangladesh monsoon season lasts from June to October and supplies most of the country's rainfall.

9. Cox's Bazar, in the south, has a beach that stretches uninterrupted over 120 kilometres, making it the longest unbroken beach in the world.

10. Rickshaws in Bangladesh cover 29,000,000 million km a day (twice the distance covered by the London Underground).
