Fundraising
Raising your target amount can seem a little daunting, but with some planning and imagination it can be an enjoyable and rewarding part of the challenge. There is lots of information on these pages and you will be supported by VSO staff every step of the way- don't hesitate to get in touch if you need resources or any more advice.
The minimum you need to raise to participate in the 2008 Kilimanjaro Challenge is £1000. Participants will pay a non-refundable deposit of £200 and then the outstanding cost of the trip eight weeks prior to the departure.

Help & Advice:
Top five tips:
1. Ask anyone and they will agree: the secret to effective fundraising is to start early and be organised.
2. Make the most of your contacts- family and friends are a great place to start, but think about who else can help, like colleagues or people in your local community.
3. Set up a justgiving page and send the link to everyone. Fundraisers have had a lot of success in the past attaching a link and some information at the bottom of all emails they send.
4. Organise an event. You can raise a lot of money quickly this way as well as having an opportunity to raise awareness (see 'Ideas' section below for possible events)
5. Publicise yourself and what you're trying to achieve. Your local media will be interested in your challenge- particularly if you're doing something quirky to raise the money.
Fundraising Ideas:
There are literally hundreds of events you could organise to raise money for your challenge:
- Organise a sponsored event, a group leg wax or beard growing competition (for the lads) or crazy hair dye (for the ladies). Offer the person who raises the most amount of money a prize.
- Hold an auction of talents or promises and utilise your friends' skills
- Hold a pub quiz and invite all your friends and family.
- Socialise! Arrange a themed dinner or party and ask friends to attend for a small entrance fee.
- Run a car boot sale and charge a small fee or ask for a donation from the takings.
- Do a sponsored walk or run (this is also great training for the trek itself!)
These are just a few ideas- let your imagination run wild! If you need any help or resources don't hesitate to get in touch. Remember to make any events you run safe for those involved and check out these Event Guidelines.
There's also lots more help and advice available on the main VSO website.
Justgiving - Top tips:
- Personalise your statement; consider making it and the photo entertaining for your donors.
- Regularly change your site so people want to re-visit it to see how you're doing. For example use it like a blog to record your training. And ask people to add it to their Internet favourites.
- Consider stating what you'll do if donations exceed a certain amount - one VSO volunteer is promising to hold a tarantula if donations go high enough!
- Consider how you send out the link. Use an alluring subject rather than 'please sponsor me', and send your link after payday! Send it to close friends and family first to get things going with higher donations. Remember people prefer personal emails to group ones.
- Name your page something obvious, that way even if people don't have your web link to hand they can still easily find your page
- People may not get around to sponsoring you straight away so send out your link more than once. Consider adding your link to your email signature. If you update your site this creates a reason to resend your link.
- Print details of your site on small business cards to hand out to friends you see.
- If you're raising money outside of the UK include a link to a currency converter.
- Gift Aid is not included in your fundraising total, but it will still go towards helping VSO so do still encourage your donors to tick the 'gift aid' box if they are eligible.
