Maria is saving babies from malnutrition
The civil war in Sierra Leone may have ended, but three in ten children still do not make it past their fifth birthday. Volunteer community nurse, Maria Hernandez works at the Magbenteh Therapeutic Feeding Centre in Sierra Leone. In this centre up to 50 seriously ill children and their mothers can get urgent lifesaving treatment.She set up a network of health educators who work with mothers in local villages to improve understanding of nutrition and hygiene. These mothers are now passing on life-saving knowledge within their communities. We aim to send 16 health volunteers to Sierra Leone to train local healthcare workers and pass on their knowledge to the communities they will work with.
Our volunteers work in over 40 countries worldwide to fight poverty by sharing skills and transforming lives. We need to recruit, train and support these volunteers, costing an average of £25,000 for two years.
