VSO Bristol - Supporter Group Meeting

This supporter group meeting is open to everyone interested in finding out more about the group and VSO. This meeting will feature a talk by ex-VSO volunteer Richard.

Richard, who was a service manager with Bristol City Council, has recently returned from a 13 month placement in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of S. E. Bangladesh where he volunteered as a management adviser for a District Council. He was part of VSO's good governance programme there and was responsible for developing a capacity building plan for the council.

He advises that the Hill Tracts with their unique Buddhist culture are a post conflict zone which is still under the occupation of the Bangladesh army. The region had sought autonomy from the state but the 1997 peace accord went someway to placating that demand. However recent changes in the status of indigenous people in the constitution and the incomplete implementation of the peace accord has fueled unrest in the area.

Richard will be talking about his volunteer experience in the area and the culture of the indigenous people there.
