Resources And Grants > School linking and awareness raising in Ethiopia and the UK
Tanzila Ahmed, volunteer in Ethiopia 2005-2006, made use of an Awareness and Action grant to run Global Education activities in the UK and Ethiopia.
Her project aimed to develop communication between the two schools involving children of a similar age group, largely through letter and email correspondence to improve mutual cultural awareness. Tanzila contacted a UK primary school, before leaving for her placement, whose current focus on citizenship and healthy eating would fit in with the Awareness and Action objectives. Here she conducted some workshops on healthy eating in Africa and followed this up by visiting the school twice since returning to the UK.
Whilst overseas, she arranged weekly after-school sessions for about 25 students, developing letter writing skills and exchanging cultural information. She then developed two presentations on England and Ethiopia based around a variety of common themes to provide both sets of children with broader information about the two countries.
Tanzila used her small grant to produce different resources for both schools including folders of the work the children had done, a CD containing pictures of both Ethiopia and England and a PowerPoint presentation. Overall the project was a great success, as Tanzila explained, “the children were enthusiastic in learning more about each other and had fun creating resources, sharing information, writing letters and also making a few videos.”
