Resources And Grants > Photo exhibition, in the UK, to raise awareness of the Dalit communities
Nimmi Undakat put together a project, using photos taken by Nishant Lalwani and an Awareness and Action grant, to develop a photo bank and exhibition to communicate the oppression of Dalit communities in India.
Nimmi and Nishant’s project entitled ‘Portraits of a Broken People’ intended to empower the Dalit Foundation, a charity based in Delhi, to raise awareness of Dalit issues. The project objectives were to investigate and photograph the situation of Dalit communities in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and record the efforts being made by activist movements to ensure social, economic and cultural rights for the Dalit people. The grant paid for the exhibition prints and display materials.
Many visitors to the exhibition were entirely unaware of the social oppression faced by the Dalit community. The exhibition achieved great success, generating a great deal of interest from the British Asian Community and those interested in Development issues, in addition to individuals from the corporate sector. As Nishant explained, “Having informally spoken to the audience members, I found that people had gained insight into an issue which they had heard of, but did not know enough about”.
