Post-Application
All those who have applied for the programme during the relevant application period will be invited to a Global Xchange Assessment Day. It is important to remember that you do NOT need any particular skills or qualifications to apply.
Assessment
The Assessment Day is nothing to worry about, it's just a chance for you and us to check that GX is right for you. This is a two-way process, making sure that you are ready to commit to a challenging programme of six months.
We take all sorts of people on as Global Xchange volunteers, and you need no specific experience or qualifications. However, there are personal qualities that make for good volunteers, which include:
- Cooperation: The ability to work well with others
- Sensitivity: An awareness of other people's feelings and needs
- Enthusiasm: A positive outlook
- Commitment to learning: Including open-mindedness
- Adaptability: The ability to adjust well to new situations
The assessment days last from approximately 9am until 4pm and include the following:
- Group dilemmas
You'll take part in a group discussion about a number of issues that may come up during the programme - Task
You'll be asked to work in a team to solve a practical problem - Individual interview
This will cover details of your personal, social and work background. This helps selectors establish whether you're ready to live and work in another culture as a volunteer.
This might sound daunting to someone who's not been to an assessment day before. But if you relax then this really can be a fun day. It is an opportunity for you to start learning more about the programme, and to meet other people who you may be spending some time with!
