About our group
We were formed to embrace the ME postal code area as a local support group to the main VSO organisation. The aims of the group are to raise awareness of VSO locally, to meet and support local volunteers and their families, to raise money, and to support other initiatives as far as possible.
Since 2001 we have been able to raise £1000 a year to send to VSO to sponsor local volunteers. For several years our local group has concentrated on two main fundraising events. One of these is a Barn Dance held around Burns’ Night in January each year, and the other is a Quiz Evening (Wine and Wisdom) usually held in September or October. We also held a Curry Evening in March this year and hope to do this again on a regular basis.
We also hold at least one purely social event each year, such as a barbecue and/or a Bat ‘n’ Trap Evening. The latter is a very enjoyable outdoor game peculiar to Kent. Added to this we have farewell/welcome home evenings for local volunteers and invite them to tell us about their experiences. We have also taken part in local ‘Meet VSO’ Evenings.
Anyone interested in helping us in any way is very welcome to join us.
