Provincial community based rehabilitation coordinator - Papua New Guinea

In PNG roughly 80 per cent of the population lives in rural areas. As a result many people with disabilities in less accessible rural areas have poor access to any form of information or services. The PNG Health Policy 2011-2015 is focused on strengthening rural health services. In response to this, provincial hospitals and provincial health divisions in PNG, including the Goroka General Hospital, have established Rural Outreach Programmes including a community based rehabilitation service that integrates the efforts of a number of service providers under the Hospital Rural Outreach Programme. This project, which is focused on strengthening capacity of CBR coordination and implementation at the provincial level, has the potential to contribute to improved access to health and rehabilitation services for people with disabilities in rural parts of the Eastern Highlands Province.

VSO has been working in Kenya for many years and has developed credibility in disability work having gained considerable experience in this area and is seen by government and NGOs as a strong partner in disability. This has included working on the UN Convention on the Rights of Disabled People as part of the Kenyan delegation.

This placement will be based in the Mombasa office of the national Association for the Physically Disabled of Kenya. The association has branches all across Kenya and aims to "enable persons with disabilities to overcome their physical limitations and empower them physically, economically, and socially to become self-reliant and fully integrated members of their communities". The placement is based in the Coast Branch which provides vocational training, production and distribution of orthopaedic mobility aids at Likoni Quality Furniture.

Information Technology Specialist - The Gambia

More then 50% of people in the Gambia live below the poverty line. Education levels are low resulting in high unemployment levels amongst young people which in turn puts an increased burden on families to continue to financially provide for them. VSO volunteers are playing a key role to improve the quality and accessibility of education in the Gambia. They are also helping government youth development programmes be as effective as possible so that young Gambians are provided with the right type of vocational, technical and entrepreneurial skills to become employable or set up their own business and therefore earn a living.
The National Training Authority (NTA) need an Information Technology Specialist who's aged 25 or under to help strengthen their information systems and train staff to use it so that there is an accurate record of skills and training providers within the country.
