Volunteer Fundraising Success Story in Co. Kerry!

Maria Lenihan is a Primary School Teacher from Killarney heading on a 2 year placement in September 2007.

Tell us about your fundraising event Maria!

In June 2007 I took it upon myself to fundraise for VSO in advance of my imminent departure for Eritrea on a teaching placement. I wanted to organise a fun and active event that would stir up interest in VSO amongst my colleagues, pupils, family and friends. I decided to organise a 'Sponsored Walk' in aid of VSO.

How did you go about publicising the Sponsored Walk?

First I contacted the local press in Kerry. Four newspapers and one local magazine printed articles prior to the date of the sponsored walk, which helped publicise the event enormously. I was so grateful to the media for being so friendly and welcoming a news item!

My main reason for advertising with the media was to raise awareness of VSO's work. I highlighted my placement as part of VSO's work in education, while also promoting the fundraising walk and attracting donations.

How did the walk go in the end?

The day of the Sponsored Walk was a humid and showery Sunday afternoon, but the walk was enjoyed by everyone. My school pupils didn't mind the rain as they were in for a treat with oceans of sweets, crisps and minerals at the 'half-way stage'. Parents enjoyed the chat, thinking it was a great way to exercise. My family and friends turned out also.

How much did you raise?

I rose a lot more money than anticipated. A teaching colleague in another local primary school held a 'non-uniform day' in aid of VSO, so that further boosted the fundraising figure.

The grand total of all our efforts came to €2600.

Any words of encouragement for other VSO fundraisers?

I have learnt a lot from the whole experience of fundraising and from raising awareness about VSO in the local press. People's kindness, good wishes and generosity was astounding. I was surprised and, indeed, delighted by it.

Well done to Maria for being such a great advocate of VSO!
