Macedonia-Greece naming argument 'due to be settled'

23/11/2009

Macedonia and Greece are due to settle a dispute over the naming of the former country in the near future, it has been reported.

The European Union expects the two country's to resolve their grievances within the next ten days, the Sofia News Agency quotes Macedonian broadcaster A1 as stating.

It added that Nikola Gruevski and Georgios Papandreou - the prime ministers of Macedonia and Greece respectively, are expected to work towards an agreement regarding the issue within the next ten days.

President of the European commission Jose Manuel Barroso expects to be informed of the conclusion by the second of December 2009, the news provider added.

As the country considers establishing its international name as the Republic of Macedonia, Greece has opposed the plans as an administrative district in the north of the country also called Macedonia.

Mr Gruevski was voted into power in August 2006 and has been a member of the country's parliament since September 2002.
