CIMA recognises work of VSO volunteer

(2 December 2004)

The work of VSO volunteer, Andrew Vickery, has been recognised by CIMA (the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) which last week presented him with the CIMA MANGO International Development Award at its annual awards ceremony.

The award recognises those who have used their professional skills to make the greatest contribution to international development or humanitarian relief, and who are using management accountancy to maximise the limited resources available, for the benefit of the least advantaged.

VSO is an international development charity that works through volunteers because it believes that people working together are the most effective solution to tackling poverty. Its unique approach to development means that it recruits skilled and experienced professionals, placing them in positions where their knowledge can be most effectively used in the world’s poorest countries.

Andrew Vickery spent 14 years working in the UK public sector before spending two and a half years working as a VSO volunteer in Tanzania. Andrew was employed by the Mission Mikocheni Health & Education Network, a Tanzanian NGO whose objective is to improve the provision of health care and education in Tanzania. The NGO runs a hospital and university in the capital, Dar es Salaam and Andrew’s role was to implement accounting and financial systems that would improve the financial performance of the hospital and university.

During his placement Andrew increased financial awareness throughout the organisations, recruited and trained new staff, implemented new accountancy systems and improved financial controls. The improved financial performance has meant that the hospital has reduced its overdraft, has been able to invest in new medical equipment and now pays staff salaries on time. The university has a new strategic plan in place, has enrolled more students and was able to fund more of its operating costs.

Andrew returned to the UK in January this year and is now working as an accountant for the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, where he specifically supports programmes in the Ukraine and China.
