A photographic exhibition on the Millenium Development Goals, from Panos Pictures

(1 August 2005)

Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, London SE1
7-18 September 2005, 11am-6pm
Admission free

This September sees a stimulating and provocative exhibition of work from widely acclaimed international photojournalists, based on the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), as agreed by the United Nations in 2000.

The seven specially commissioned photo essays will include the goal to achieve universal primary education, sponsored by international development charity VSO. Photos from Ethiopia will bring the lives of the ordinary people at the raw end of the global anti-poverty campaign more sharply into focus. Inviting comparison between their everyday lives and our own, the men, women and children depicted will be people we can identify with, not objects of pity.

Alongside the seven photo essays, a final interactive installation will illustrate and interpret the ethos of these important milestones to making the world a fairer place. As part of the eighth goal, every visitor is invited to do something to help change the world, and record their pledge on a hanging wall of witness. Every individual pledge creating a ripple that will form an unstoppable tide.

The exhibition coincides with the UN Special Summit to review the progress made on the Millennium Development Goals (14-16 September), which include eradicating extreme poverty and hunger and getting all children into school. Showcasing the work of award-winning photographers, Panos Pictures will be illustrating these familiar issues from a new and challenging perspective. Each goal has been 'sponsored' by charities Concern, VSO, Action Aid, Plan, Interact, Panos Institute and WaterAid according to its particular area of expertise.
