(11 July 2005)

Promise of AIDS treatment for all strongly welcomed but insufficient new aid will undermine its delivery

The Stop AIDS Campaign, a coalition which VSO is a leading member of, has welcomed Tony Blair's announcement of universal access to AIDS treatment but asking whether they are addressing the funding gap to ensure this is possible.

Kirsty McNeill, Stop AIDS Campaign Manager said, from Gleneagles:

Ending the deaths and incapacity AIDS is causing across Africa is vital to making poverty history. The G8's commitment to universal treatment will bring hope to millions. What remains to be seen is whether those hopes will be dashed by insufficient funding.
Simon Wright, spokesperson for the Stop AIDS Campaign in Gleneagles said:

The G8 are to be congratulated for responding to the global movement for AIDS treatment. However, the additional aid that they are announcing may not be sufficient or fast enough.
