National Volunteers Week, 1-7 June 2005

(31 May 2005)

VSO, the international development charity that works through volunteers, is celebrating National Volunteers Week from 1-7 June by asking people to think what skills they could offer the developing world.

Every day ordinary people are making a difference to the developing world as VSO volunteers. Vital services like education and health need skilled professionals to be effective, so VSO volunteers work with their local colleagues to provide training and knowledge in Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Caribbean regions.

You don’t need to be a world leader to make a difference; VSO has 1,500 volunteers currently working overseas. Over the past 48 years VSO volunteers have been working to make poverty history in the poorest countries in the world. At the moment VSO is recruiting especially for education managers, social workers, business advisors, doctors, speech therapists, nutritionists, IT trainers and irrigation engineers. VSO placements are for skills actually requested by developing countries, to provide the knowledge that they really need.
