News from around VSO > Cameroon
New approaches in volunteering (November 2004)
Traditionally, VSO has placed skilled and experienced volunteers with an organisation for a period of two years. However, VSO Cameroon's Strengthening Capacities for Organisational and Institutional Development (SCOID) programme works with pools of volunteers work on a consultancy basis a group of 4-8 partner NGOs who identify their own needs and ask for assistance from the pool. The advantages of this approach are that volunteers with complementary skills work together to maximise their impact, NGOs facing similar challenges can support each other and the approach reduces the risk of NGO over-dependence on an external development worker. For further details, please see a new report on the website of our Dutch partner, PSO:

Agreement with government signed (August 2004)
VSO Cameroon has recently reached an accord de siège (headquarters agreement) with the government of Cameroon.
This clear administrative basis on which to work is important for VSO to operate effectively with government and other organisations in Cameroon. In order to establish an appropriate agreement, VSO Cameroon has conducted extensive negotiations with the government through which a shared committment to tackling development issues in Cameroon has been cemented.
