News from around VSO > Sierra Leone
Work commences in new programme (19 August 2004)
In early August 2004, VSO's new Sierra Leone Country Director made her first visit to meet key programme partners and establish the new programme. The DfID (Deparment for International Development)-funded programme will focus on governance: supporting new local councils and civil society organisations to engage in open planning processes. VSO will also build on its global expertise in HIV & AIDS programming to help our partners contain the virus in Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone programme to re-open (15 July 2004)
UK Secretary of State for International Development, Hilary Benn, has approved a recommendation by his officials to fund VSO to re-open its programme in Sierra Leone.
The Department for International Development will provide full funding in Year 1 (£220,000), reducing in steps to zero in Year 4 by which time VSO will support the full cost. The programme will focus on participation and governance and initially work with 8 key partners on strengthening local government and youth associations - with a component on HIV & AIDS.
