Volunteers tour VSO placements in a Filipino Jeepney

(2004)

Former VSO Philippines volunteers Paul Farbon and Rebecca Hale have just arrived in Hanoi as part of their return to the UK from their placements in a 15,000km journey across Asia in a 'jeepney'. Jeepneys are used as public transport vehicles in cities and countryside throughout the Philippines and following shipment to Bangkok, Paul and Rebecca have driven theirs through Thailand, Laos and now Vietnam where Paul, who worked for three years on Mindoro Island, Philippines, as an environmental volunteer for VSO, comments that 'Filipino expatriates have been very excited that one of their cultural icons has arrived in Hanoi.' He adds: 'We hope to add to the good relations among the Philippines, Vietnam and the United Kingdom' although the journey mainly aims to visit the positive efforts of communities to look after the environment, including, in Vietnam, Fauna and Flora International’s project on Cat Ba Island, which has a VSO volunteer, and Cuc Phuong National Park, where Education for Nature - Vietnam (ENV) is working with another VSO volunteer funded through the British Embassy.
