    Malawi - 5 facts
    • Malawi is frequently referred to as ‘The Warm Heart of Africa’ because of the friendliness of its people.
    • The main mode of transport in Malawi is the bicycle, and they don’t just carry people. A live pig or goat often goes along for the ride.
    • Lake Malawi is the third largest lake in Africa, covering 20% of the country. Nicknamed ‘The Lake of Stars’ because of the glittering produced by reflected light, it is home to over 500 species of fresh water fish – more than are found in Europe and North America combined.
    • The Lake of Stars International Malawi Music Festival is an annual event attracting big names, promoting Malawian music and raising money for charity.
    • Travelling through Malawi, it’s common to see young boys by the side of road selling barbequed rats and mice on sticks.
