VSO - Sharing Skills, Changing Lives

Volunteer stories > Being an educational psychologist

Sinéad Quinn (pictured) is a VSO volunteer in Cambodia, working with the Disability Action Council.

As part of her role, Sinead works alongside Mr Han Touch, the head of the Rabbit School, founded six years ago.

In this time, the Rabbit School has been the only school for children with disabilities in the whole country. Now Sinéad and Touch are developing it as a model for the future of education across Cambodia, and as a base where the country’s first special needs teachers can be trained.

The 30 children at the Rabbit school have all been orphaned or abandoned by their families. All of them have disabilities; some very severe. In Cambodia, as in many cultures, disability is thought to be the result of evil deeds carried out in a previous life.

Sinéad is also working with local colleagues to devise policies that will ensure children with disabilities all over the country can benefit from the new attitude towards disability that she and Touch are helping to foster. It’s a 'joined-up' approach that is typical of VSO's unique way of sharing skills in developing countries.
