About the Code of Good Practice for Youth Volunteering

There are two main codes we are working with our partners on:

    1. A general code of good practice for international volunteering

We are working on this with a group of Scottish NGOs through the NIDOS International Volunteering Group, with Tourism Concern in England and other key partners.

    NIDOS International Volunteering Group:
Code of Practice for Volunteer Sending Organisations

NIDOS is a network of organisations in Scotland involved in international development. NIDOS aims to improve the effectiveness of Scotland's international development sector by facilitating and promoting the sharing of experience, ideas and information on international development policy and practice.

The NIDOS International Volunteering Group is led by NIDOS member organisations that recruit and send volunteers to undertake work in developing countries. The Scottish Code of Practice for Volunteer Sending Agencies and its accompanying Volunteer Charter were developed by the NIDOS International Volunteering Group.

Aim of the Code of Practice

The Code of Practice aims to promote high standards of practice and improve the quality of work undertaken by Scotland's International Volunteer Sending Organisations. We want to ensure that the work we deliver is appropriate to and driven by the needs of our partner organisations and the communities we work with. We want to ensure that our volunteers receive the best possible support before, during and after their placements, while at the same time ensuring that their presence adds value and is not a burden for our partners. The Code of Practice defines the commitments we make to our partner organisations and communities, and to our volunteers.

    2. Guidelines for international youth volunteering

We have been working on this with VSO's Youth for Development and Global Xchange (GX) teams, with SPW (Students Partnership Worldwide - http://www.spw.org) and DiA (Development In Action http://www.developmentinaction.org)

The Guidelines for Youth Volunteering compliment the NIDOS Code of Practice and focus on the youth aspect of good practice in international volunteering.
