Helping poor people have a say in government

    (24 August 2005)

CIDA Canada Corps have granted approx £250,000 to VSO Bangladesh’s 'SCORE' project (Strengthening Communities Rights and Empowerment). In 3 districts of southwest Bangladesh, SCORE will help local communities (especially women) identify and assert their rights and help 44 local government bodies (UPs) respond to these demands in an accountable way. Over 30 months, the funding will support short-term and long-term Canadian volunteers, training workshops, learning and networking visits, small grants and advocacy activities.

In addition, GlobalAware Canada will offer communications mentoring to volunteers once in Bangladesh and one volunteer will pool materials coming out of this for an awareness-raising roadshow across 15 cities in Canada. Another partner, Institute on Governance will help VSO with predeparture training of volunteers for their work in governance.

Bangladesh - VSO capacity building benefits 54,000 people

    (2004)

VSO Bangladesh has helped develop the capacity of local non-governmental organisations, providing significant benefit to approximately 54,000 disadvantaged women, girls, men and boys from ethnic minority communities and rural subsistence/landless communities. This is the key finding of a recent ex-post review of the VSO Bangladesh NGO capacity building project (1997 to 2000), financed by the UK Community Fund.

The review found evidence that project partners are providing services to 42,000 additional people as a result of VSO working with them on their strategy and systems. 57% of these people are women and girls and 70% are from otherwise unserved and profoundly marginalized ethnic minority communities in south eastern Bangladesh.

A further 12,000 beneficiaries from ethnic minority communities in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and landless and/or marginal subsistence farming communities in Sylhet are receiving significantly improved services as a result of the project.
