VSO - Sharing Skills, Changing LivesNews from around VSO > VanuatuNew funding for Small Grants Scheme(1 February 2005) VSO Vanuatu has secured £10,267 from the Asian Development Bank to fund the Small Grants Scheme which gives national non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Vanuatu, Kiribati and Tuvalu the opportunity to apply for funding to meet locally identified needs. Grants have already gone to Vanuatu Women’s Centre, to carry out training on the prevention of violence against women, and the Lakalakabulu Council of Chiefs, to support their strategic planning process. Participants have commented that accessing a small grant is a first step towards accessing wider opportunities and further funding. Not only is valuable work done with the money, but the process of generating proposals and managing the small grants is also a valuable capacity building exercise in itself. Blokem HIV/AIDS(4 November 2004) VSO Vanuatu has just received news that it will receive £39,100 from the Pacific Regional HIV/AIDS Grants Scheme (funded by AUSAID) which will part-fund their two year Blokem HIV and AIDS project due to start in March 05. 'Blokem HIV/AIDS' is Bislama, Vanuatu’s version of pidgin. It means 'block AIDS' or 'Stop AIDS'. Volunteers will work with staff within the Ministry of Health to develop and manage the national HIV and AIDS strategy as well as improving linkages between organisations working to prevent HIV and AIDS in Vanuatu. VSO's LINKS programme will also be co-ordinating a visit by VSO Vanautu programme partners and staff to Uganda to learn from successful experiences in similar work there.
