VSO - Sharing Skills, Changing Lives

    Our volunteers

Right now over 1500 VSO volunteers are sharing valuable skills in 34 of the world’s poorest countries. But as impressive as they are, those are just statistics! So here’s your chance to put some names and faces to those numbers. We hope these stories will inspire you.

    Bola's story

Giving something back to the community has been a life long passion for education manager Bola Ojo. Taking early retirement and volunteering with VSO for 12 weeks meant she could continue to contribute to the community – but this time in Rwanda.

    Dave’s story

After many years at senior management level within local government, Dave Sternberg decided to take a career break and volunteer with VSO. He spent two years working for a high-profile women’s rights organisation based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

    Laura’s story

Youth for Development volunteer Laura Carse, who is visually impaired, spent a year working with The Creative Self Help Centre in Papua New Guinea raising awareness of disability and challenging misconceptions.

    Lesley’s story

Management professional Lesley Chapman volunteered in the Gambia with an organisation supporting poor people to make a living. Once the organisation was low profile and struggling but thanks to Lesley and her colleagues it is now well-respected and thriving.

    Oliver’s story

Doctor Oliver Jefferis volunteered in Malawi through a joint scheme between the Royal College of Paediatrics and VSO. The programme is seen as professional development for junior doctors and provides recognition for the volunteer job when they come back to the UK.

    Peter’s story

With 30 years’ experience as a teacher and twelve years as head teacher at a large comprehensive in Plymouth, Peter Reid has the combination of hands on classroom teaching and management experience that VSO is looking for. After retiring he and his wife Rosemary decided to volunteer in Nepal.
