Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa, is among the poorest countries in the world, ranking 177 out of 182 on the United Nations' Human Development Index.
VSO volunteer work in Burkina Faso seeks to help this emerging people assert control over their lives. Volunteering in Burkina Faso will involve skilled professionals passing on their knowledge by working with civic groups as well as governmental institutions at both local and national level.
The AIDS pandemic has wreaked terrible havoc in Burkina Faso, especially among women, who are now the most heavily afflicted. In response, VSO seeks medical professionals to support the national government's health development programme by working in medical facilities and teaching hospitals.
Volunteering opportunities also exist for persons trained in such support fields as advocacy, fundraising and management.
Volunteering Opportunities in Burkina Faso require volunteers to have working knowledge of French. These placements are also currently limited to those who are eligible to apply through CUSO-VSO only.
