Volunteer work in Ghana

Volunteer Work in Ghana - Kwame Jaforktuk

In Ghana, VSO Volunteers are working to develop the educational system, improve the lives of the disabled, and promote secure livelihoods for the poor in the country.

VSO Ghana has gained recognition for its work in disability, in particular through the production of the Protect Yourself - HIV and AIDs Awareness video. Volunteers work with community based organisations to strengthen them and support them through advocacy in order to give access to vulnerable groups with disabilities. For example, they promote access to quality basic education for children with disabilities, and protect the rights of women with disabilities.

International education volunteers work in management and training roles to improve the quality of education, as well as advocate for education for women and girls. VSO works with National education volunteers to address the need shortage of classroom teachers, in particular in rural locations.

The new area of work for VSO in Ghana is in secure livelihoods where volunteers support poor rural communities to find ways to earn a sustained income. VSO places volunteers who have business management and development backgrounds in areas where many strive to make a living.
