Volunteer Work in Jamaica with VSO
Jamaican youth living in inner-city areas face severe challenges to their wellbeing due to the prevalence of poverty, gang-related violence, high rates of unplanned parenthood, and HIV and AIDS. High involvement of unemployed youth in gangs has contributed to a homicide rate in Jamaica that is four times the world’s average.
VSO volunteers' work in Jamaica focuses on addressing these challenges, to ensure a brighter future for these young people.
VSO volunteers are working to give young women and men confronting poverty, unemployment and social exclusion benefit from access to new opportunities for employment, education and community participation.
VSO's work in Jamaica is part of a regional programme in co-operation with organisations in Canada. Currently only volunteers recruited through CUSO-VSO in North America are able to participate in this programme.
