Volunteer work in Malawi
VSO’s work in Malawi focuses on health, education and secure livelihoods. Volunteers work in regions where there are excessive levels of poverty, a high prevalence of HIV and Aids and low involvement of other international charities.
HIV and AIDS is a great challenge in Malawi, with more than one in ten Malawians being HIV positive. VSO volunteerscampaign to raise awareness and combat stigma associated with HIV and AIDS, support prevention and increase the availability of treatment, care and support for those infected and affected by the HIV and AIDS epidemic.
VSO is part of a joint initiative with the Malawi government, the United Nations and the UK Department for International Development to boost the skills of Malawian health professionals.
Secure livelihoods activity works to ensure people with the smallest plots of land, particularly female-headed households and people living with HIV and AIDS, can feed their families and earn a living by making the best use of their land.
VSO volunteers in Malawi are also working to help improve educational standards. These education volunteers are working to make sure that all children, especially young women and girls, receive the best education.
