Volunteer work in Rwanda

Volunteer work RwandsSince 1997, VSO Rwanda has been active in promoting education and health care services in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide. The country experienced a severe shortage of teachers after the genocide, and since then volunteers have helped deliver educational success and stability.

Along with educational programmes, VSO Rwanda is also working to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in this country. We are constantly working to promote HIV/AIDS awareness programmes in secondary schools and encourage students to create anti-AIDS clubs.

Professionals volunteering with VSO in Rwanda work to promote AIDS awareness and provide means for students to create their own organizations through schools.

Another key factor in VSO's volunteer work in Rwanda has been helping people with physical disabilities and mental health trauma. The genocide left many with physical disabilities and mental health trauma. VSO Rwanda has been working with the Rwandan government, which has created a programme to help the disabled. The programme is designed to promote fair treatment of disabled people and to help them secure the proper health care they need.

VSO in Rwanda is also working on an externally-funded programme to help recruit health care volunteers and to create programmes for physical and psychiatric rehabilitation. These initatives also help fund special education and teacher training to help improve the quality of education in Rwanda.
