Volunteer work in South Africa
Despite being one of the fastest growing economies in Africa more than half of South Africa’s population still lives on less than $2 a day. South Africa also has one of the highest rates of people living with HIV and AIDS.
VSO's work in South Africa focuses on HIV and AIDS and with particular emphasis on groups made vulnerable by the pandemic such as women and children.
VSO volunteers work in a number of different areas. Volunteers advocates that children have a right to be educated, have food to eat, receive proper healthcare, and remain safe. Volunteers also advocate for the rights of women. Volunteers educate local communities about HIV and AIDS, supporting its prevention and proper treatment. Women are also provided with business skills to support them to earn a living and maintain their independence.
Local volunteers are a key network of carers, and advocate for the rights of the most vulnerable. Many local agencies exist to support individuals involved in local volunteering and VSO volunteers are supporting them by improving staff skills in areas such as communication, fundraising, project planning and management and advocacy.
