Volunteer Work The Gambia

Since 1960, VSO has been sending volunteers to The Gambia. Our work there currently focuses on education, secure livelihoods and disability.
VSO volunteers work with the country's education ministry to improve educational services, with a particular focus on primary education. Volunteers train locally qualified teachers in the one teacher training college in The Gambia. They also support the regional directorates to support cluster training teams to deliver in-service training.
Under our secure livelihoods programme, volunteers also work directly with people in rural communities, training them in modern farming techniques and teaching them new skills to manage and grow small business in order to enable Gambians to better support themselves and their communities.
VSO volunteers are also active in assisting Gambians with disabilities through such activities as direct support, advocacy and public education, and assisting local agencies for the disabled.
