Volunteer work in Zambia
VSO volunteers work in Zambia to support the delivery of the priorities identified in the Fifth National Development plan. The work focuses on HIV and AIDS, Secure Livelihoods and Participation and Governance.
There is a prevalence rate of 16% of HIV & AIDS in Zambia. VSO volunteers are therefore active in the areas of prevention, treatment, care, support and impact mitigation.
70% of farming in Zambia is undertaken by women. VSO volunteers therefore focus on teaching Zambian women how to earn a living and support themselves. They also advocate for the rights of women to own and control the land they farm.
Volunteer jobs involve working to increase the participation of citizens in a number of ways. Policy advisors are working with district councils to devise strategies that consider all constituents, while business managers, advocacy and communication specialists and human rights advisors are volunteering with community agencies to increase their understanding of the rights of local people and to support them in campaigning for those rights to be met.
