Making a difference

VSO can offer you something other volunteering organisations can’t:  the opportunity to make an enduring difference by helping improve the institutions that serve poor people.

The idea is that you work together with your colleagues to improve practices, techniques and procedures. That means that when you go home, the impact you’ve made will live on.

Patience has its rewards

The pace of life – and work – in many developing countries may be slower than you’re used to. It’s vital for you to adapt so your efforts are respected and absorbed by your colleagues. What at first seems to be slow progress was the bedrock on which later successes were built.

Antonia Eastman (Rwanda - Disability)

New found hope: Antonia Eastman in Rwanda

Sifa, a young Rwandan girl, was found in Nyungwe forest, in the far south west of the country. It was clear she had been alone for a long time – she walked on all fours, was surviving on a diet of grass and sticks, and was terrified of people. We find out how VSO volunteer Antonia Eastman has played a crucial role in helping her new carers turn her life around.
