Irrigation engineers

By improving available irrigation systems you can enable disadvantaged rural groups to grow crops throughout the year. Your work will enhance food security and increase income. You'll be involved in preparing designs for the development of irrigation projects. You'll work with local farmers and other stakeholders to ensure that they participate in the design and implementation process. You’re likely to be involved in the development of operation and maintenance manuals as well as the planning and facilitation of staff training. You may also work at district level to design and implement irrigation-development plans for the region.

You'll need a degree in engineering with extensive experience in planning, designing and implementing small-scale irrigation schemes. Specialised qualifications in irrigation or water resources would be an advantage.

Roles are generally longer term, ranging from one to two years, and we also have occasional short term assignments for up to six months. For short term roles, you will need at least six years' experience in your field and be available to depart within one year.

In return, we'll give you comprehensive financial, personal and professional support.  We'll provide you with extensive training before your placement, and our financial package includes a living allowance, return flights, accommodation, insurance and more.  When you return to your home count, we'll help you to resettle and many of our returned volunteers stay involved with us long after their placement ends.

You could be working in countries like Malawi and Ethiopia.
