Specialist Assignments > Case Study - Maggie Powell

Fundraising advisor in Sierra Leone

Maggie has over twenty years’ experience working for international development agencies, not-for-profit organisations and in public sector health care, both in the UK and overseas. Maggie’s specialist skills are planning and management in all areas of fundraising, programme funding grant management and marketing. She travelled to Sierra Leone in April 2005.

Maggie spent nearly three weeks in Sierra Leone working as a Fundraising Adviser with a group of NGO Youth Service Agencies. These NGOs had identified financial resources as a barrier to their future activity. They needed help to overcome this barrier. Maggie’s objective was to identify the key factors impacting on their funding, and to provide practical advice and recommendations. With this advice, the NGOs would be able to develop good fundraising strategies that would ensure their work could continue.

Maggie reviewed the external funding environment in Sierra Leone, addressing the key issues these NGOs face in building relationships with donors. She supported the NGO staff in creating resource development strategies and work plans. These would enable the NGOs to fundraise for both current and future projects. Maggie’s clear report was invaluable to the NGOs she worked alongside. Her placement also increased VSO’s profile amongst other international NGOs in Sierra Leone.
