Job Description
The Zomba Mental Hospital is the larger of two such hospitals in Malawi and acts as a national referral hospital for all psychiatric patients. There is one psychiatrist, one psychiatric clinical officer, 7 psychiatric registered nurses and a team of 11 enrolled psychiatrist nurses all of whom are based at the hospital. There is no Clinical Psychologist at the Hospital or in Malawi at the moment, thus VSO has received a request for short-term Clinical Psychologist volunteers to provide on-going rolling support over a 12-month period.
The main duties of the volunteer will be to provide mental health counselling services to patients and staff at the Hospital and to the community that benefits from the services of the hospital; teaching and supervising medical students, nursing students, psychiatric students, paramedical students, intern doctors, intern clinical officer; advising the Head of Department and Ministry of Health and Population on all matters of psychiatric patient care related policies and importance of counselling services for all people mentally challenged and those that are at risk of developing mental illness; and mainstreaming HIV/AIDS activities for patients and or staff and community of the hospital.
The first short-term volunteer placement will run February 2008 – June 2008, the second June 2008 – September 2008 and the third volunteer September 2008 – February 2009. VSO is also recruiting other volunteers to work in the Hospital including Occupational Therapists and Psychiatrists.
Requirements
Essential
- Qualified Clinical Psychologist, with current registration
- To work as a specialist or consultant in Malawi, a prospective candidate must have held the position of Clinical Psychologist or consultant in a hospital and done hands on work as a Clinical Psychologist or consultant for a minimum of 2 years
- Must be flexible and adaptable
- Must be able/willing to train others
- Must show commitment to learning
