Business partnerships scheme > Becoming a VBP volunteer
Types of opportunity available
VSO receives over 50 requests a year for VBP volunteers to work as management or business advisers. The roles are varied but are generally concerned with organisational and staff development.
Key duties include organisational assessment, implementing change, strategic planning, staff development, monitoring and evaluation. Some assignments have an emphasis on a particular sector of management, for example human resources, but a broad range of transferable skills will be required.
Recent assignments have been located in countries such as Bangladesh, Kazakhstan and Tanzania.
Necessary qualifications and experience
Volunteers usually require an academic or professional qualification in a business/management related subject. However, considerable experience and transferable skills are just as important. We need people with at least two years' (and often much more) experience in strategic planning, organisational development, managing teams, change management, systems development, staff development, financial management, PR and marketing.
Length of assignments
The majority of VSO assignments are for two years, but VBP assignments have been specifically tailored to our business partners' needs. VBP assignments are short term and are designed to minimise any disruption to company business.
As a result of the small number of assignments available each year, priority for these assignments is given to employees of our official partner companies.
If you are not an employee of one of these companies, please find out about our standard volunteering jobs.
The application process
Applicants for a VBP assignment must fill out a standard application form. Before starting an application we recommend that you use this website to find out more about the VSO experience.
Applicants will then attend an assessment day at one of our recruitment bases. Once selected, they will attend at least two short pre-departure training courses. The application process for VBP volunteers is exactly the same as it is for other volunteers.
Terms and conditions for VBP volunteers
During their assignment, VBP volunteers work under the same terms and conditions as other VSO volunteers. They are not paid their normal salary instead a local allowance and accommodation are provided. However, VBP volunteers are not usually entitled to VSO grants.
In addition, partner companies may wish to cover some of their employees home-based costs while they are on their assignment. This remuneration package varies from company to company.
