South Asia earthquake

VSO's response to the south Asia earthquake

VSO is responding now to the needs of earthquake survivors in Pakistan. It is feared that 54,000 people may have died in the massive earthquake which struck in the early hours of October 8, with up to another 47,000 injured.

Aid agencies on the scene have estimated that more than 1,000,000 people are in urgent need of shelter and up to four million have been left homeless.

Volunteers needed to support relief effort

Since our merger with beso earlier this year, VSO is able to respond to requests from our overseas partners for short-term volunteers.

Following initial assessments and discussions with local organisations working in some of the areas worst-affected by the earthquake, VSO is now sending short-term volunteers to support the immediate relief effort. We are working in partnership with the Joint Action Committee – a coalition of national NGOs involved in the response to the earthquake.
