Sabbaticals for Teachers in Wales

Volunteering with VSO has long been recognised as a great opportunity for personal development. But just as important is its potential for professional development. According to a 2006 report by the Chartered Institute Of Management and VSO, 94% of employers agree that long term overseas volunteering broadens skills.

The Welsh Assembly Government recognises this too. That’s why they’re funding our new guide ‘Sabbaticals for Teachers in Wales’ as part of the ‘Wales for Africa’ initiative. The guide covers everything from how volunteering dramatically improves teacher motivation to building relationships between children in Wales and in developing countries. If you’re a teacher in Wales and you’re considering volunteering, this guide is indispensable.

‘Volunteers return home with renewed enthusiasm for teaching and a cultural understanding which makes a vital contribution to our own classrooms. If you are considering volunteering you have my support and I hope that this guide helps you in making what could truly be a life-changing decision.’
Jane Davidson AM
Minister for Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills
Welsh Assembly Government

‘Volunteering with VSO offers teachers an opportunity to have an impact on the lives of thousands of children in Africa and Asia by helping to improve the quality of education they receive. But it can also have a significant impact on their professional development and, through that, on the education of children in Wales. As a volunteer, individuals are challenged both professionally and personally, often taking on responsibilities that enable them to progress in their career on their return to Wales. Schools and students in Wales benefit from the increased global dimension that former volunteers bring to their teaching and the international links they can help establish. I would encourage head teachers and governors to consider the benefits of granting leave of absence to volunteers.’
Gary Brace
Chief Executive, GTC Wales
