Volunteering

STEP ONE: Search for opportunities > Agriculturalist

We have opportunities for agriculturists, agricultural teachers and trainers and agricultural economists to help disadvantaged communities enhance their food security and reduce their vulnerability to climatic changes. In countries with unstable economies, agricultural education can be vital in preparing young people to return to their villages and set up their own small-scale agricultural enterprises.

You could be working in countries such as Malawi, Papua New Guinea, Uganda, Guyana and the Philippines.

Necessary qualifications and experience

You'll need a relevant degree or appropriate vocational qualification and two years' related experience. Agricultural teachers will need a relevant teaching qualification and agricultural economists will need a degree in agricultural economics. Agricultural scientists will need a degree and relevant experience in their specific area.

Types of opportunity available

You could be sharing your knowledge with farm cooperatives and small NGOs, encouraging the sale of agricultural produce to raise money for health care or education. Alternatively you might be working as a farm manager in other institutions, including schools. These jobs often contain an element of agricultural education. We also have some jobs in agricultural education in universities.

Agricultural economists often work for government departments undertaking research and report writing, although some will be working with farmers. We have occasional jobs for agricultural scientists across a variety of specialisations.
