Binta is from a poor rural family in northern Sierra Leone. After moving to Freetown she met and married her husband. For a while, Binta’s life was good. But following the birth of their son, Binta’s husband left her. Soon after, she discovered she was HIV positive. Her husband was the only man she had ever slept with.
Every day, nearly 3000 women worldwide become infected with HIV – often by their husbands.
Despite this, women are still being ignored by governments and organisations that claim to be fighting HIV and AIDS.
In Sierra Leone, VSO volunteer Davina Wong decided to do something about it. Working with the Society for Women with AIDS in Africa, Davina lobbied to get legislation protecting women’s rights through parliament, and established a support centre for HIV positive women which Binta now attends.
Now you can do something too.
